Kinesiology
The study of the principles of mechanics and anatomy related to human movement.
Occupation
Anything that makes up a person's time; involves meaningful engagement in activities such as work, recreation, and daily tasks.
Quantitative Measures
Assessment methods that utilize numerical data to guide decisions, such as range of motion and strength testing.
Qualitative Measures
Assessment methods based on observations and descriptions of a person's performance and experience.
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Self-care tasks essential for basic functioning, e.g., showering, dressing.
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)
More complex actions that support daily living and independence, e.g., managing finances, meal planning.
International Classification of Functioning (ICF)
A framework that focuses on health and functioning rather than just disability, integrating medical and social models.
Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF)
A structure defining the areas of knowledge and expertise in occupational therapy, including context and environmental influences.
Body Functions
Physiological functions of movement-related systems such as joint mobility, muscle tone, and endurance.
Motor Development
Changes in movement patterns that occur over time, beginning at birth and continuing throughout life.
Motor Learning
The acquisition or modification of learned movement patterns that typically occurs over a short time frame.
Active ROM (Range of Motion)
The joint movement performed by the client independently.
Passive ROM (Range of Motion)
The joint movement performed by a therapist moving the client's limb.
Manual Muscle Testing (MMT)
A method of evaluating the strength of specific muscles through resistance techniques.
Open Kinetic Chain
A form of movement where the distal segment moves freely, allowing for independent joint movement.
Closed Kinetic Chain
A form of movement where the distal segment is fixed, affecting multiple joints during movement.
Biomechanics
The study of the mechanical aspects of living organisms, particularly the forces and movements in human activity.
Universal Design (UD)
Design principles aimed at making environments accessible to all individuals regardless of age or ability.
Proximal Stability
The stability of the body's core which is necessary for effective distal movements.
