Severe Mental Illness (SMI)
A small group of mental disorders which significantly impact someone’s functioning and carry a high burden of disease.
Serious Mental Illness (SMI)
Mental health conditions with significant impacts on daily functioning and overall life quality.
Bipolar Disorder
Mood disorder characterised by significant fluctuations in mood, ranging from extreme elevated states (mania) to severe depressive episodes.
Psychosis
An umbrella term for symptoms indicating a loss of contact with reality.
Positive Symptoms of Psychosis
Symptoms that add to someone’s ‘typical’ experience.
Negative Symptoms of Psychosis
Symptoms that take away from typical experiences
Hallucinations
False sensations (auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, gustation)
Delusions
Fixed, false beliefs that are not consistent with one’s culture or “reality”.
Thought disorder
Thoughts are not organised, they me be frequently interrupted lines of thought or off-topic (tangential), lack flow and logic (inchoherence) or simply be in absence (poverty of thought).
Mania
High energy levels, positive mood, irritability, inappropriate behaviour, unusually promiscuous, heightened creativity, mystical experiences, racing thoughts, rapid speech, grandiose thoughts
Hypomania
Less intense mania and shorter durations without psychotic features.

Disability-adjusted life years, with one DALY equating to one healthy year of life lost
