Leaf Adaptations for Gas Exchange
Leaves are wide and thin with few layers, providing a large surface area to volume ratio for efficient diffusion.
Stomata
Microscopic openings in the lower leaf layer that allow CO2 to enter and oxygen + water vapor to exit the leaf.
Guard Cells
Cells that control the opening and closing of stomata.
Transpiration
Evaporation of water through open stomata.
Photosynthesis
Process that produces glucose when light is present (CO2 + water → glucose + oxygen).
Aerobic Cell Respiration
Process that creates ATP constantly (glucose + oxygen → water + CO2).
