Stress
A physical and emotional response to internal or external demands, threats, or challenges.
Coping
Thoughts and behaviors used to manage stress and adapt to difficult situations; can be adaptive or maladaptive.
Nursing Intervention for Stress
Educate and help practice adaptive responses and coping mechanisms.
Crisis
A sudden or overwhelming psychological state which is time limited but urgent.
Goal of Crisis Intervention
Reduce distress, ensure safety, and restore functioning.
Trauma Informed Care/Practice
A guiding principle for ER Nursing that considers single events or repeated experiences over time to inform care core principles.
Risk Assessment (Examples)
Includes assessing history of violence or aggression, psychosis, depression, status of a perpetrator, substance availability, and suicide thoughts, plans, intent, or means.
Safety Management (Examples)
Includes search and seizure of harmful objects, removal of weapons, developing a safety plan, reducing stimulation, and immediate medical stabilization.
Duty of Care
A legal and ethical principle focusing on patient safety and the responsibility of the nurse to the patient.
Beneficence
The ethical principle of doing good and preventing harm, which must be balanced with patient autonomy.
Legal & Ethical Mandates
Includes confidentiality with legal limits, informed consent and capacity, mandatory reporting laws, and accurate documentation.
Therapeutic Psychosocial Nursing Components
Rapport, therapeutic communication, therapeutic relationship, and advocacy.
Adaptive Response
A positive type of coping behavior that nursing interventions aim to help patients practice.
