New cards

Aquatic

include both freshwater and marine biomes (freshwater: have salt content of less than 1%) (marine: cover close to 3 quarters of Earth’s surface)

2
New cards

Grassland

dominated by grass and have a warm, dry climate (2 types: tropical ___, [sometimes called Savannas] or temperate ____). Savannas are found close to the equator and can have a few scattered trees. Temperate _____ are found further away from the equator, do not have any trees or shrubs, and receive little precipitation. Ex of temperate _____: Prairies (tall grass) and steppes (short grass)

3
New cards

Forest

dominated by trees and cover 1/3 of the Earth. Biodiversity is huge here. 3 major ____ biomes: temperate [at higher latitudes and experience all 4 seasons], tropical [warm, humid, and found close to equator], and boreal (or taiga) [found at even higher latitudes than temperate, and coldest and driest climate, precipitation is usually snow].

New cards

Desert

dry areas where rainfall is less than 50 cm (20 in) per year. They cover around 20% of Earth’s surface. Can be cold or hot, but most are found in subtropical areas. Not much biodiversity, any wildlife or vegetation living here must have adaptable habitats or special adaptations. Wildlife consists mostly of reptiles and small mammals. ____ can fall into 4 caategories: hot and dry, semi-arid, coastal, and cold

5
New cards

Tundra

lowest measured temperatures of any biome. Average yearly temperature ranging from –34 to 12 degrees C (-29 to 54 F). Low precipitation 15-25 cm (6-10 in) per year. Short summers and poor soil health. There are 2 types of ____: artic and alpine. Barely any diversity and little vegetation. Vegetation includes shrubs, grasses, mosses, and lichens. Permafrost keeps the ____ from being able to mass produce vegetation. Arctic ____ is found north of boreal forests while alpine ____ is found on mountains where the altitude is too high for trees to survive. Wildlife inhabiting the ____ must be adapted the extreme conditions to survive
