What is Organizational Behavior (OB)?
The systematic study and application of knowledge about how individuals and groups act within organizations where they work.
What are the three levels of analysis in OB?
Individual, Group, and Organization level.
Why does OB matter at the Individual level?
Getting along with others, lowering stress levels, making more effective decisions.
Why does OB matter at the Group level?
Resolving intra- and intergroup conflict and building cohesion.
Why does OB matter at the Organization level?
Understanding and valuing the people within the organization.
What are the top five personal qualities/skills valued by employers according to a NACE study?
Problem-solving skills, ability to work in a team, strong work ethic, analytical/quantitative skills, written communication skills.
What is the problem with the idea that OB is just common sense?
OB is a systematic study, not just common sense, and research is needed to validate understanding.
What is Learning in the context of OB?
A relatively permanent change in knowledge or skill produced by experience.
What is Retention?
The ability to recall or recognize what has been learned over time.
What are the different Learning Style Preferences?
Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (tactile).
What is Chunking?
Taking single pieces of information and grouping them into larger units.
What is Overlearning?
Continued studying and practice after initial proficiency has been achieved.
What are Hypotheses?
Tentative guesses or hunches for an expected observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested.
What are case studies?
offer an in-depth description of a single company or industry
What are Field Studies?
Research conducted in actual organizations, involving surveys or experimental designs.
What is a Treatment Group?
A group that receives experimental manipulation.
What is a Control Group?
A group that does not receive any experimental manipulation so it can be compared to a treatment group.
What are Laboratory Studies?
Controlled conditions – high degree of internal validity but potentially low generalizability
What is Machine Learning?
Algorithms generate models based on data and update as new info is available.
What is Meta-analysis?
A technique used to summarize what other researchers have found on a given topic
What are Surveys?
tools used to elicit respondents’ reactions to specific questions.

The consistency of measurement.
What is Validity?
The degree to which a measure captures what it intends to measure.

Measures the strength of the relationship between two variables.

The act of making something happen.

The term that refers to a single observation
Define Data
The term used to describe multiple observations and is always plural (as if you were using the word numbers)
What is Descriptive Analytics?
Approaches focused on understanding what has already happened.
What is Prescriptive Analytics?
A focus on what should be done in the future based on what we know
What is Triple Bottom Line?
Evaluating organizations against three performance criteria including economic, social, and environmental viability.
What are Sustainable Business Practices?
Practices that meet the current needs of businesses without compromising the needs of future generations.
What is Gig Economy?
The prevalence of temporary employment positions where individuals are independent contractors rather than employees of organizations.
What is Outsourcing?
An organization asking an outside organization to perform functions that could have been performed by itself.
What is Business Ethics?
Ethical principles applied to situations that arise at work.
What is Employee Engagement?
The degree to which employees are fully involved in and enthusiastic about their work.
What is Offshoring?
Refers to some or all of a business process being moved from one country to another country.
