Food Groups
The 5 Food groups ensure a well-balanced diet, include: Pats, Milk and Milk Products, Meat and Meat Alternatives, Fruits and Vegetables, and Cereal and Cereal Products.
Milk and Milk Products Nutritional Value
Rich in Calcium (strong bones and teeth), Protein (builds/repairs tissue), Carbohydrates (energy), and Water (regulates body processes).
Pasteurized Milk
Milk heated to 71 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes, then cooled to 10 degrees Celsius.
UHT Milk
Milk heated to 138 degrees Celsius, then packed in sterile packaging.
Skim Milk
Milk that contains 0.1% fat.
Evaporated Milk
Milk in which some of the water content has been removed, allowing a longer storage time.
Milk Powder
Milk from which all the water has been removed, resulting in a long shelf life. It still contains all the nutrients.
Milk Alternatives
Non-dairy, plant-based milk from sources like nuts, rice, and seeds. Examples: Soy milk, Almond milk, Oat milk, Cashew milk, Macadamia milk, Pea milk, Quinoa milk, Rice milk, Hemp milk, Coconut milk.
Vitamins and Minerals Importance
Vitamins and minerals are a very important part of our daily diets.
Meat and Meat Alternatives Nutrients
Protein (builds and repairs tissue), Iron (formation of haemoglobin).
Types of Meat
Includes Beef, Lamb, Mutton, Pork, and Poultry (Chicken, Ducks, Turkey, Ostrich).
Fish Types
Includes White fish (Hake) and oily fish (Salmon, Angel Fish, Snoek, Tuna).
Meat Alternatives
Includes Nuts, soy, Tofu (made from soya beans), Legumes etc.
Botanical Fruit
Anything that grows from the flower of a plant is considered a fruit.
Culinary Vegetable
Defined by taste, not botanical origin. Examples: tomatoes, peppers, and corn.
Nutrient
A substance essential for nourishment, maintenance of life, and growth.
Six Essential Nutrients
Protein, Carbohydrates, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water.
Protein Function
Responsible for growth, health, and body maintenance. Helps build muscle.
Carbohydrates Function
Provide energy and help fuel your body, especially your brain and central nervous system.
Fat Function
Provides long-term energy, insulation and protection, and supports many body functions.
Vitamins Function
Facilitate use of other nutrients, ward off disease, and support body functions.
Minerals Function
Help build bones and teeth, aid in muscle function, and regulate metabolism.
Water Function
Crucial for every system in the body, carries nutrients, removes waste, and hydrates the body.
Cereals and Cereal Products Nutrients
Carbohydrates (starch, sugar, fibre), Vitamin B-group.
Fibre Function
Stimulates peristaltic movements in the small and large intestines, preventing constipation and colon diseases.
Examples of Cereal Products
Bread, Pasta, Biscuits.
