Civic obligation

A duty or action that a citizen is required by law to do.

Four main civic obligations

1. Obeying laws 2. Paying taxes 3. Serving on a jury when called 4. Registering for Selective Service (eligible males aged 18–25)

Civic responsibility

A voluntary action that citizens should do to help their community and democratic government.

Examples of civic responsibilities

1. Voting in elections 2. Volunteering in the community 3. Staying informed about public issues 4. Attending local government meetings

Contract between citizens and government

Citizens agree to follow laws and pay taxes. In return, the government protects their rights, keeps order, and provides safety and public services.

Consequence if no one served on juries

Courts could not work, and people accused of crimes would not get a fair trial by a group of regular citizens.

Consequence if no one voted on Election Day

Democracy would fail, and leaders could rule without the permission or choices of the people.

Consequence of no one registering to serve in the military

The country might not have enough people in the military to defend the nation during a major emergency.

Protection, safety, or guaranteed rights

Without government, citizens would not have these.

Work properly, provide public services, or rule with the permission of the people

Without good citizens, government could not achieve these.
