First mystery:
The Resurrection
Second mystery:
The Ascension
Third mystery:
Descent of the Holy Spirit
Fourth mystery:
Assumption of Mary
Fifth mystery:
Coronation of Mary
Alternate explanations for Jesus’ resurrection:
Apostles experienced a mass hallucination
Apostles stole the body and hid it
Jesus did not die on the cross- he fainted and revived later.
It’s all a myth- made up over the simpler stories about Jesus
What’s the big problem with the third and fourth explanation?
Because there’s the question of “Where did Jesus go?”
Another three explanations:
A pack of wild dogs stole Jesus’ body
It was empty because they went to the wrong tomb.
The apostles lied because they were humiliated.
What did the author say is the core of Christian belief?
The resurrection.
What is the difference between resurrection and recusiscitation of a corpse?
Resurrection shows us what God thinks of the body. Jesus’ post resurrection body was different than before.
How was Jesus’ body different after his resurrection?
He could walk through walls, he wasn’t immediately recognizanble, and had wounds from the crucifixion.
Why is the resurrection significant?
It’s God’s clear signal that Jesus is the powerful Son of God who has conquered death and reigns as Lord of all. The resurrection demonstrates that Jesus’ “blood of the new covenant” saves His people from their sins.
What is the transcendental significance of the resurrection?
What was the resurrection?
3 days after Jesus was crucified, he rose again from the dead.
What is the 7th Covenant?
7. New Covenant. This covenant, found in Jeremiah 31:31-34, promised that God would forgive sin and have a close, unbroken relationship with His people. The promise was first made to Israel and then extended to everyone who comes to Jesus Christ in faith
What determines where we go when we die?
The particular Judgement- How strong our Faith is and how good our Works were.
Beatific Vision
Achieved in heaven, perfect communication with God.
Purgatory
State of purification after death for those who need to be made clean and holy before Heaven.
Eschatology
theology concerned with the end.
Final Judgement
At the end of times, “Parousia,” second coming.
It is false to say “God sends people to Hell” because
We have free will so we make the choice whether to believe in God or to make sins and separate ourselves from Him.
How does free will play a part in our eternal destiny?
Our sins have ramifications for future generations. Use free will wisely to follow God.
Why did Jesus ascend?
Glorification- Jesus’ glory remained hidden in his humanity even after resurrection, even though some glimpses are seen, it is fully revealed in the Ascension.
The transcendetal significance of the Ascension is:
The Ascension signifies that Christ is no longer bound by the time and space that he was while he was in the fullness of his humanity. Jesus is Lord and that means that Lordship goes beyond mere humanity.
Transcendental significance of The Descent of the Holy Spirit:
Through the descent of the Holy Spirit the Christian faith was established in the world and the Church of Christ began its existence
When do we first receive the Holy Spirit?
Confirmation
Historical significance of the Ascension:
Jesus' passage from this world into divine Glory in God's heavenly domain forty days after his Resurrection. It is from this domain that Jesus will come again
Transcendental significance of the Ascension:
Also the promise of our own resurrection. Death is not the final chapter in our own life. We are offered salvation and redemption, we do not cease to exist. Then, at the end of time, we receive our new, improved bodies.
Historical significance of Pentecost:
The day fifty days after Easter when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and gave them the power to preach with conviction the message that Jesus is risen and is Lord of the universe. The Church celebrates Pentecost every year as the beginning of the new "age of the Church," when Christ lives and acts in and with his Church through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Transcendental significance of Pentecost
When the Church began- When Mary and the apostles gathered in the upper room to escape the crowd, and the Holy Spirit came down in tongues of flame to give them courage.
It means the Holy Spirit came down to us people for the first time and gave us a better connection and relationship with the Lord
What is Christian’s relationship with Mary?
Mary is our mother, we can pray to her, we can ask for her intercession. Intercede: to pray for you. Yes, Mary is a saint. The queen of all saints. We don't worship her.
What was the Assumption of Mary?
Ascension is Jesus, Assumption is Mary. Her whole body was assumed into heaven.
What level of authority does this teaching have?
Dogma
What is dogma?
A fact of Church we believe.
Does dogma require us to believe that Mary died?
No, however she didn’t have original sin, which is death of the body, and she was assumed into Heaven without stopping to be cleaned of sin.
Mary was free from Original Sin and its stain. Why is that significant?
She can’t be assumed into Heaven with original sin.
What happened in the fifth mystery?
Mary is crowned Queen of all Saints.
What is the transcendental significance of the 5th mystery?
It shows us that Mary is our queen. We as Christians should honor, love, and respect her as Jesus did.
