Diction

The careful and purposeful choice of words in writing.

Syntax

The arrangement of words and phrases in writing.

Author's Purpose

The reason the author writes; commonly to entertain, inform, or persuade.

Connotation

The emotional weight or significance a word carries beyond its literal meaning.

Denotation

The literal, dictionary definition of a word.

Figurative Language

Language that makes comparisons or uses expressions not meant to be taken literally.

Literal Language

Language that means exactly what it says, without embellishment.

Simile

A comparison of two unlike things using 'like' or 'as'.

Metaphor

A direct comparison between two unlike things without using 'like' or 'as'.

Hyperbole

An exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally.

Personification

A figure of speech where non-human things are given human traits.

Alliteration

The repetition of initial consonant sounds in neighboring words.

Oligarchy

A small group of people having control of a country or organization.

Disfranchisement

The removal of the right to vote or other rights as a citizen.

Bill of Attainder

A legislative act that singles out an individual or group for punishment without trial.

Ex Post Facto Law

A law that punishes actions that occurred before the law was enacted.

Aristocracy

A form of government in which power is held by the nobility.

Suffragist Movement

A movement aiming to grant women the right to vote.

Telegraphic Sentence

A very short sentence without detailed explanation.

Staccato Sentence

A brief sentence that often stands alone to create impact.

Imperative Sentence

A sentence that gives a command.

Declarative Sentence

A sentence that makes a statement.

Interrogative Sentence

A sentence that asks a question.
