Introduce yourself to patient

Identify patient using two methods of identification

Explain what procedure entails, adding that their eyes may tear up

Position patient with head slightly back

Open swab carefully, do NOT TOUCH end of swab

Insert swab until at least 0.5 inches inside the nostril

Roll swab for 15 seconds

Repeat swab with other nostril

Hand tissue to wipe their nose

Break off end of swab and place into transport tube
