Civil Rights Movement

A movement for racial equality and justice that occurred primarily in the 1960s, advocating for the rights of African Americans.

Good Trouble

A phrase coined by John Lewis referring to necessary actions taken to challenge injustice and promote social change.

Institutional Discrimination

Denial of opportunities and equal rights resulting from the normal operations of a society.

Color Blind Racism

The use of the principle of race neutrality to defend a racially unequal status quo.

Prejudice

A negative attitude toward an entire category of people, often based on their ethnic or racial identity.

Racial Group

A group set apart from others due to physical differences that have taken on social significance.

Ethnic Group

A group distinguished from others primarily due to national origin or distinct cultural practices.

Affirmative Action

Positive efforts to recruit minority group members or women for jobs, promotions, and educational opportunities.

Glass Ceiling

An invisible barrier preventing a qualified individual from being promoted in a work environment due to their gender, race, or ethnicity.

Redlining

The discriminatory practice of denying services, typically housing-related, to residents of certain areas based on their race or ethnicity.
