Active Site
The region of an enzyme where substrates bind and undergo a chemical reaction.
Lock and Key Model
A model that suggests that the enzyme and substrate fit together perfectly without any changes in shape.
Induced Fit Model
A model that suggests that the enzyme changes shape to better fit the substrate after binding.
Hydrophobic Interaction
A type of non-covalent interaction between non-polar molecules, helping to stabilize the structure.
Salt Bridge
An electrostatic interaction between positively and negatively charged side chains in proteins.
Pyruvate Kinase
An enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a phosphate from phosphoenol pyruvate to ADP to form ATP.
Phosphate Group
A chemical group consisting of a phosphorus atom bonded to four oxygen atoms; carries negative charges.
Transferase
An enzyme category that transfers a functional group from one molecule to another.
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
A molecule that carries energy within cells; consists of adenosine and three phosphate groups.
Cofactor
Non-protein chemical compounds or metal ions that are required for the biological activity of an enzyme.
