Acculturation

Socialization process by which one learns and adopts selective aspects of another (usually dominant) culture

Assimilation

means to absorbs/take in, whether its physically (like food) or culturally (new customs or ideas)

Health literacy

the ability to find, understand, and use health info to make decisions about your wellbeing

Gender identity

defined as the personal sense of one’s own gender

Linguistic competence

capacity for providing readily available, culturally appropriate oral and written language

Culture

way of life on basis of some common purpose, need, or similarity of background; totality of learned, socially transmitted beliefs, values, and behaviors from members’ interpersonal transactions

Cultural identity

enduring, fundamental aspect of self that includes membership to a cultural group

Cultural competence

ability to interact effectively with people of difference cultures

Cultural humility

being open and willing to reflect on oneself as a cultural being; being open to hearing about and striving to understand cultural background and identity of others

LGBTQIA+

nurses look the knowledge about health care needs of people who are in that group

Religiousness

participation in a community of people gathering around common ways of worshipping

Underrepresented population groups

people from various ethnic and nondominant groups that have a disproportionately low represent relative to number in general population
