Step 1
Communicate what will happen during the procedure in a clear, straightforward manner to ensure the client understands.
Step 2
Provide privacy to the client before the procedure using a curtain, screen, or door.
Step 3
Ensure the client puts on shoes or non-skid footwear before assisting them to stand.
Step 4
Check that the bed is at a safe level before helping the client to stand.
Step 5
Verify and/or lock the bed wheels before assisting the client to stand.
Step 6
Assist the client into a sitting position with their feet flat on the floor in preparation for standing.
Step 7
Securely apply the transfer belt around the client's waist over their clothing or gown before assisting them to stand.
Step 8
Provide the client with a clear signal to start standing, such as counting to three.
Step 9
Use an upward grasp on the transfer belt to help the client stand gradually, holding it securely on both sides.
Step 10
Ensure the client's legs are stable during transfer by positioning yourself knee to knee or toe to toe with them.
Step 11
Walk slightly behind and to one side of the client, holding onto the transfer belt, for a distance of ten (10) feet.
Step 12
After transfer, assist the client to bed, remove the transfer belt, ensure the signaling device is within reach, and lower the bed.
Step 13
Wash your hands after completing the skill to maintain hygiene.
