Nation

A community of people that shares a common culture, history, language, religion or belief system, affinity to a place, and historical experience.

State

A political entity that wields sovereignty over a defined territory using laws, taxation, government, and bureaucracy as the means of regulating life, requiring diplomatic recognition to be legitimate internationally.

Nation-State

A state governing a nation, representing a fusion of the elements of nation (people/community) and state (territory).

Peace of Westphalia

The seventeenth-century event with which the 'classical' nation-states of Europe began.

Primordialism

An essentialist stance that traces the roots of the nation and national identity to existing and deep-rooted features of a group of people, such as race, language, and religion.

Modernity (Theory of Nationalism)

A line of thinking suggesting that nation, national identity, and nationalism are necessary products of the social structure and culture brought about by capitalism, industrialization, secularization, urbanization, and bureaucratization.

Constructivist Approach

An influential view maintaining that nationalism and nations are discursive, socially constructed, and imagined by people who identify with a group.

Benedict Anderson

A scholar who argued in 2003 that nations are 'imagined communities' connected by a 'deep, horizontal comradeship,' emphasizing the key role of mass media and language standardization.

Imagined Communities

A concept introduced by Benedict Anderson tracing nations back to the Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution, and French Revolution, where communities are socially constructed and bound by shared perception.

Katipunan

The organization led by Andres Bonifacio that spearheaded the first anti-colonial revolutions in Asia during the 19th century.

Sikolohiyang Pilipino

An indigenous intellectual movement in the Philippines that introduced concepts like kapwa and bayan to understand local social relations and nationalism.

Kapwa

An important concept in Filipino social relations that supports unity and harmony in the community by mediating interaction through an understanding of one's affinity with another.

Bagong Kasaysayan
