Unitary System
A government that gives all key powers and decision making to the national or central government
Confederate System
A loose union of independent states, with a weak ineffective central government
Federal System
A government that divides the powers of government between the national government and state or local governments
Autocracy
a system of government by one person with absolute power
Oligarchy
a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution.
Democracy
A political system in which the power to govern and participate is by the people/citizens who vote on issues and laws
Monarchy
A government ruled by a king or queen
Absolute Monarchy
A government in which the head of state is a hereditary position and the king or queen has almost complete power
Constitutional Monarchy
A King or Queen is the official head of state but power is limited by a constitution and an elected body of law makers
Dictatorship
A form of government in which the leader has absolute power and authority, and uses force to get conformity
Direct Democracy
A form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives
Representative Democracy
A form of government in which citizens elect representatives, or leaders, to make decisions about the laws for all the people.
Coup d'etat
A sudden and violent overthrow of the government by a small group of rebels
Separation of Powers
the division of power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government
Checks and Balances
A system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches in order to prevent abuse of power
Popular Sovereignty
A government in which the people rule by their own consent.

the elected lawmaking body of British government

the head of an elected law making body of government such as in Great Britain
