What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy is always conserved. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred from different stores/objects (however it can be turned into mass)
Kinetic energy
Energy an object has because it is moving
Equation for kinetic energy
EK=0.5MV2
Gravitational potential energy
Energy an object has because of its height above the eaths surface
Equation for gravitational potential energy
EGP=mgh
Elastic potential energy
Energy an elastic object has when it is stretched or compressed
Equation for elastic potential energy
EE=0.5KE2
What is meant by a closed system
In a closed system, energy cannot be transferred from or to the surroundings
Unit of measurement for energy
J (Joules)
Unit of measurement for velocity
m/s
Unit of measurement for mass
kg
Unit of measurement for gravitational field strength
N/kg
Unit of measurement for height
m
Unit of measurement for spring constant
N/m
Unit of measurement for extension
m
Define dissipated energy
“wasted energy”. energy that is transferred to the surroundings and not been used usefully.
