It occurred because it was a beauty standard, and was seen as very feminine. If women bound their feet then you were seen as wealthy, or of greater significance. They broke the toes, bound tightly so it wasn’t grown.

Chivalry
Chivalry was the moral, religious, and social code of conduct for medieval knights. It emphasized virtues such as courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak. Knights were expected to be loyal to their lord, protect the defenseless, and uphold Christian values in their actions and behavior, both in warfare and in daily life.
