Opium War
A conflict between China and Great Britain caused by trade imbalances and the illegal import of opium by the British East India Company.

Territories created by European states inside China where they established western political and economic control.
John Hay
The U.S. Secretary of State who proposed the Open Door policy regarding trade in China.
Open Door policy
A policy proposed by John Hay stating that any country could trade inside China.
Order of the Silentews and Harmonius fists
An anti-foreign group in China, also known as the Boxers, who went on a rampage killing missionaries because they were upset about foreigners taking over their country.
Sun Yat Sin
The leader who became president of China in 1911 and modernized the country.
Leopold II
The King of Belgium who turned the Congo into his own plantation, cut rubber trees, killed elephant herds for ivory tusks, and stripped the land of its people.
Liberia
An African nation established by former slaves from the U.S. who did not want to stay after the Civil War was over.

The determined leader of Ethiopia who was ready to fight and successfully kept Ethiopia free from imperialist claims.
Cecil Rhodes
A British adventurer who made a fortune off of gold and diamond mines in Africa.
Sepoys
Indian soldiers hired by the British East India Company to protect the company's interests, forts, and soldiers.
Sepoy muteny
An 1857 Indian revolt against British rule, sparked by rumors that bullets were greased with cow and pig fat, which offended Hindu and Muslim religious beliefs.
Queen Victoria
The British monarch who acquired the title of Empress of India after Parliament transferred power from the British East India Company to the British government.
Michandus Gandi
The leader who took over the Indian independence movement in 1915 and transformed it into a non-violent movement that led to Indian independence.
