Compound
Two or more chemically combined elements formed to achieve stability with full outer energy levels of electrons.
Ionic Bond
A bond formed between a metal and a nonmetal in which the metal transfers electrons to the nonmetal.
Covalent Bond
A bond formed between nonmetals in which electrons are shared.
Cation
A positively charged metal ion formed when a metal atom loses electrons.
Anion
A negatively charged nonmetal ion formed when a nonmetal atom gains electrons.
Ionic Compound
A compound made of charged ions where the overall charge must be zero, meaning the total positive charge equals the total negative charge.
Polyatomic Ion
A positively or negatively charged, covalently bonded group of atoms.
Transition Metal
A metal that can form multiple different ions with varying oxidation numbers, requiring a Roman numeral in its name to specify its charge.
Ammonium
A polyatomic cation with the chemical formula NH4+1.
Sulfate
A polyatomic anion with the chemical formula SO4−2.
Nitrate
A polyatomic anion with the chemical formula NO3−1.
Carbonate
A polyatomic anion with the chemical formula CO3−2.
Hydroxide
A polyatomic anion with the chemical formula OH−1.
Acetate
A polyatomic anion with the chemical formula C2H3O2−1.
Phosphate
A polyatomic anion with the chemical formula PO4−3.
Chlorate
A polyatomic anion with the chemical formula ClO3−1.
