Explain
Why skin is examined: to detect early changes such as lumps or lesions which can be signs of skin cancer; they can be treated if caught early.
Who should perform self-assessment: anyone can benefit from regular self-assessments.
Frequency of skin exam: once a month.
Define
ABCDE rule - concerning if:
lesion is Asymmetrical.
lesion Border is irregular or not distinct; no hard edge.
lesion is multiple Coulours.
lesion is greater than 6mm in Diameter.
lesion is Elevated or Evolves/changes over time.
Report to your doctor.
Performance
Equipment needed: full length mirror, handheld mirror, comb or blow-dryer to part hair.
Undress completely, check forearms and palms, turn over hands and check backs and between fingers.
Face mirror, bend arms at elbow, study arms.
Check entire front of body starting at face to neck to torso working down lower legs.
Turn to the side, checking from upper arms down to ankles, repeat on other side.
Turn your back, check your butt, thighs, lower legs.
With back turned, use handheld mirror to check upper back.
Use handheld mirror to study scalp while lifting hair with a comb or a blow-dryer in the other hand.
Sit on chair or bed, check insides of each leg and soles of feet using handheld mirror.
