Force

An operational definition described as a push or a pull.

Contact Forces

Forces that occur when objects touch each other.

Tension

A contact force that pulls on an object, usually in a straight line.

Friction

A contact force that opposes the motion of objects in contact.

Shear

A contact force that causes the particles in an object to move across each other in layers.

Compression

A contact force that pushes objects closer together.

Field Forces

Forces that act on objects even when separated by distance and do not have to touch.

Magnetic Force

A field force exerted between magnets and magnetic materials, such as some metals, that also affects moving electrical charges.

Electric Force

A field force exerted between electrical charges, such as the force moving charges between a cloud and the ground during lightning.

Gravity

A field force exerted by matter on other matter that gives things weight and holds planets, solar systems, and galaxies together.

Microgravity Environment

A condition in orbit where gravity cannot be measured because everything is falling around the Earth at the same rate.

An experiment conducted on the ISS to grow crystalline monoclonal antibodies in a microgravity environment to improve drug manufacturing, delivery, and storage.

Monoclonal Antibodies

Crystalline molecules that attach to specific molecules in the body to target diseases, grown in microgravity on the ISS to allow in-depth analysis.
