what are the second ancillary subtests in the WAIS-5
•Information (IN)
•Arithmetic (AR)
•Digits Background (DB)
•Symbol Search (SSP)
•Naming Speed Quantity (NSQ)
•Comprehension (CO)
•Set Relations (SR)
•Spatial Addition (SA)
•Letter-Number Sequencing (LN)
when would we use the ancillary scores

general ability index
similarities, vocabulary, block design, matrix reasoning, figure weights
cognitive proficiency index
digit sequencing, running digits, coding, symbol search
information subtest
•just need manual and record form, client doesn’t receive anything for this subtest
•There’s queries (Q) for this one too; you can query as many times as the manual states
•Start point is Item 4; it has a + meaning it’s a teaching item we can correct them→Item 5 is also a teaching item
•Discontinue rule is 3 continuously
•Substitution for Vocabulary or Similarities
•Expanded Verbal Comprehension Index: includes similarities, vocabulary, information, and comprehension
how many subtests can we mess up on
one, you cannot mess up on all of them and substitute all of the subtests
when is one going to more than likely administer all of the tests in the WAIS?
If you’re doing something in the field of neuropsychology, then you’re more than likely going to administer all of the tests, since you’d be focusing on identifying irregular brain patterns or cognitive deficiencies in clients
arithmetic subtest
•need stopwatch, stimulus book 2, record form and manual
•Do sample item first, then start with item 4
•Timing is 30sec, but don’t want to penalize client with time
•First you read them the math problem, and immediately start the timer after you finish
•IF person asks you to repeat question, we are allowed to repeat it only one time; while doing this we have to pause the stopwatch while we are re-reading the question
•We can repeat various items on the test
•Technically don’t need the stimulus book, if person gets item 4 or 5 incorrect then you would need it
Substitution for figure weights
symbol span
•stimulus book 2 the entire time, stopwatch, record form, manual
•Expose each stimulus for five seconds
•This is the test in which you have to show the person symbols for five seconds and then ask them to point to the symbols that they just saw-> memory task
•Have to remember the order of the symbols from left to right
•Administer the sample item first, then go to Item 1
naming speed quantity subtest
•need stopwatch, stimulus book 2, record form and manual
•Each item if 75 seconds; timing is important because the scoring is based on the amount of time it took person to complete the items
•If person makes error on the numbers, put a slash mark if they get it incorrect
•This test is very fast paced, so as administrators we need to pay attention; accurate timing is important
•If they make an error on the sample item, this is the only time when we’d stop the person and correct them→ If they make an error on the actual items, let the person continue and just make note of it
There’s only two items to administer in this test( yeS GAWD)
substitution for coding or symbol search
comprehension
•same rules apply as the other verbal subtests
discontinue after 3 consecutive wrong answers
substitution for information or vocabulary
set relations
•begin with item 1, then go to Item 4
•This is the one with the Venn diagrams
•Substitution for matrix reasoning; part of the expanded fluid reasoning index
spatial addition
•Need table to be wider; stimulus book will kind of be hanging off from table but has to be closer to you; need the blank grid and the blue and white chips
•The chips are spread out
•Pg 200 in manual shows you the setup
•Start with demonstration Item A
•Need to have the 3x3 grid to start with, the back of the page has the 4x4 grid
Scoring: correct responses are indicated in the column from our perspective
similarities substitution
Information or Comprehension
vocabulary substitution
information or comphrehension
block design substitution
visual puzzles
matrix reasoning substitution
set relations
figure weights substitution
Arithmetic or Set Relations
digit sequencing substitution
Digits Forward, Running Digits, Digits Backward, or Letter-Number Sequencing
coding substitution
Symbol Search or Naming Speed Quantity
for report writing, what do we start discussing
•You start out with the full scale IQ score, and then go down the line with all the composite index scores
•If they have significant strengths of weaknesses, you would write it in the report as well
when writing reports, why is it good for us to use qualitative descriptors in our findings
Using the following descriptors is helpful to use in psychological reports because not everyone understand the terminology in our field
-EX. Composite score of 98 is average
what are the composite and classification of the scoring range
extremely high > 130
very high 120-129
above average 110-119
average 90 -109
below average 80-89
very low 70-79
extremely low < 69
