Values

Individual beliefs that motivate people to act one way or another.

Moral Values

Universal values which man holds to be good and important; ideal values which transcend all times and are valid for all regardless of race and religion.

Cultural Values

The core principles and ideas upon which an entire community exists.

Behavioral Values

The inner responses or incentives which prompt a person to act in a certain way.

Characteristics of Values

The three core characteristics of values: Subjective, Societal, and Situational.

Moral Law

Universal truths and ethical principles which ought to guide the individual conduct of man in matters of right and wrong.

Types of Moral Law

The three types of moral law: Divine Law, Natural Law, and Physical Law.

Filipino Values

Standards or principles set forth by the Filipino society as a basis for what is right or wrong, guiding members to reach ultimate self-realization in relation to family and society.

Family (in Philippine Society)

The basic social unit in Philippine society where values and principles are nurtured and imbibed, with close family ties considered the foundation of society.

Three Main Traits Underlying Filipino Values

Personalism, Familialism, and Particularism.

Three Main Obligations Underlying Filipino Value Orientation

Relational (pakikipagkapwa), Emotional (damdamin), and Moral (karangalan).

Utang na Loob

A situation where an individual is required to return a favor or service received, which cannot be translated into monetary equivalent and may be reciprocated over a month of service or even a lifetime.

Bahala Na

A trait reflecting the belief in a Supreme Being and supernatural spirits, leading Filipinos to firmly rely on God to take care of things for them.

Mañana Habit

A Filipino trait originating from the Spanish colonization era (from 'Mañana' meaning 'tomorrow') that enforces procrastination by putting off work to be done in the near future or last minute.

Ningas Kugon

Translating to 'burning of cogon grass,' it refers to starting work or endeavors with strong enthusiasm but gradually slowing down and losing the drive to finish.

Amor Propio

A Spanish term meaning a sense of self-esteem or self-respect that prevents a person from swallowing his pride, reinforcing the Philippine trait of 'hiya' (shame).

Pakikipagkapwa-tao

A Filipino character strength resulting in camaraderie, a feeling of closeness to one another, and serving as a foundation for unity as well as a sense of social justice.

Family Oriented (Filipino Character)

A Filipino strength resulting in a feeling of belongingness, rootedness, and a basic sense of security.

Joy and Humor (Filipino Character)

A Filipino strength resulting in emotional balance, optimism, a healthy disrespect for power and office, and the capacity to survive.

Flexibility and Adaptability

A Filipino strength resulting in productivity, innovation, entrepreneurship, equanimity, and survival.

Hardwork and Industry

A Filipino strength resulting in productivity and entrepreneurship for some, and survival despite poverty.

Faith and Religiosity

A Filipino strength resulting in courage, daring, optimism, inner peace, as well as the capacity to genuinely accept tragedy and death.

Ability to Survive

A Filipino strength resulting in the capacity to bravely live through the harshest economic and social circumstances.

Extreme Personalism

A weakness of the Filipino character that leads to graft and corruption.

Extreme Family Centeredness

A weakness of the Filipino character that causes a lack of concern for the common good and acts as a block to national consciousness.

Lack of Discipline

A weakness of the Filipino character resulting in inefficient and wasteful work systems, violation of rules leading to serious transgressions, and casual work ethics.

Self – Reflection (Weakness)

A deficiency in the Filipino character leading to an emphasis on form more than substance.

Kanya-kanya Syndrome

A weakness of the Filipino character resulting in the dampening of cooperative and community spirit and the trampling upon of the rights of others.
