What is a force?
A push or pull acting on an object is called a force.
What is the SI unit of force?
Newton
What effects can a force applied to an object produce?
A force can move a stationary object, stop a moving object, increase or decrease the speed of a moving object, change the direction of motion, or change the shape or size of an object.
What are contact forces?
Forces that act only when two objects are physically touching.
What is muscular force and what are some examples of it?
Muscular force is the force exerted by the action of muscles; examples include walking, lifting, and the pumping of the heart.
What is frictional force and what causes it?
Frictional force opposes the relative motion between two surfaces in contact and always acts in the opposite direction of motion. It is caused by microscopic irregularities interlocking on the surface.
How do surface roughness and fluids affect friction?
Rougher surfaces produce more friction, and liquids and gaseous fluids also exert friction on objects moving through them.
What are non contact forces?
Forces that act when objects are separated by a distance.
What is magnetic force and how do magnetic poles interact?
Magnetic force is exerted by a magnet, where like poles repel and unlike poles attract.
What is electrostatic force?
Electrostatic force is exerted by a charged body on another charged or uncharged body, where like charges repel and unlike charges attract.
What is gravitational force according to the lecture notes?
Gravitational force is the attractive pull exerted by the earth or salientian bodies on objects, and it is always attractive.
