Sociological Family
Defined by social roles & cultural expectations, varying across societies; in ECE, helps educators respect diverse family types & promote inclusion.
Economic Family
A group living together & sharing finances, including same-sex couples & foster children; in ECE, helps educators understand how finances may impact access to resources.
Legal Family
Includes those recognized by law (marriage, adoption, guardianship, etc.); in ECE, guides who has legal rights for the child such as decision-making & pick-up.
Psychological Family
Provides emotional support, belonging, & care; in ECE, highlights the importance of secure relationships for a child's development.
Meaningful Multicultural Practices
Including culture in everyday routines & play with books, toys, & activities that reflect different cultures, including newcomers to Canada & Indigenous groups in NL.
Family-Centered Approach
An approach that values each family's strengths & encourages involvement in a flexible, respectful way; programs adapt to the family's needs.

Family Climate
The emotional environment; a warm, caring climate helps children feel loved & builds confidence, which supports learning & friendships; a stressful/cold climate can cause fear/anxiety.
Family Hierarchy
Who makes decisions at home; when it's clear & consistent, children are more likely to follow rules & routines; if it's unclear, children may struggle with authority/direction.
