An area with common characteristics
Colony
Permanent settlement where people settle in an area conqured by a foreign power
Columbian Exchange
Global trade of people (European immigrants, slaves), goods, technology, ideas, and disease (smallpox) that occured during the 15 and 1600s
Europe→America: coffee, pigs, horses, cows, rice wheat
Americas→Europe: tobacco, potatoes, tomatoes, corn
Indentured Servant
Worker who agreed to work without pay for a certain period of time (usually 7 years) in exchange for passage on a boat to America
Triangle Trade
A trade route that exchanged good between (1) the West Indies & the British Colonies in the Americas, (2), Europe, and (3) West Africa. (and back again to the West Indies)
Middle Passage
A part of triangular trade when enslaved Africans were shipped from Africa to the West Indies (often then resold and shipped to 13 colonies / United States).
Chattel slavery
A practice which defined enslaved Africans as property, not as people
