what are the thermal properties of water?

• absorbs large amounts of heat energy (hydrogen bonds first broken)

• specific heat capacity (1g by 1 C)

• makes for an effective coolant - evaporation of sweat - absorption of heat

what are the solvant properties of water?

• large amounts of water = weak ionic bonds and form dispersive hydration shells

• make water a factor of metabolic reaction

define hydrophilic

substances that can dissolve in water

• transparent - lets light pass through (important for photosynthesis and vision)

• expands when frozen (less dense) - important for life on earth; ice floats, oceans don’t freeze
