Includes nuclei involved with control of breathing
Medulla Oblongata
Lowest part of brain stem
Merges into spinal cord
Contains control centers for: heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, swallowing, vomiting
Reticular Formation
Mass of gray mater extending along the brain stem
Neurons here involved with motor control of visceral organs
Reticular Activating System (RAS) plays a role in sleep/wake cycles
Damage here can result in a permanent coma

3 layers of covering around CNS
Made of connective tissue
Dura Mater, Arachnoid layer, Pia Mater

2 layers of protection around brain: periosteum attached to skull and meningeal outside of the periosteal layer
1 layer of protection around the spinal cord: meningeal

Middle layer of protection that is web-like

Internal layer that clings to the surface of CNS
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Forms a watery cushion to protect nervous tissue of CNS from blows and other trauma
Similar composition to blood plasma
Formed from blood by choroid plexus
Circulated in arachnoid space, ventricles, and central canal of spinal cord
Blood Brain Barrier
Least permeable capillaries in the body
Permeable to: water, glucose, essential amino acids, fats and fat soluble molecules, respiratory gases, alcohol, nicotine, anesthesia
Not permeable to: metabolic wastes, most drugs, non-essential amino acids
Spinal cord anatomy?
Extends from medulla oblongata to the L2 lumbar vertebrae
Below L2: cauda equina (collection of spinal nerves)
Functions: reflexes, motor signals from here go to effectors, sensory signals pass through en route to the brain
