Why is the magnetic field required in a Mass Spectrometer?

The magnetic field in a mass spectrometer separates ions based on their mass to charge ratio (m/z). As ions pass through the magnetic field, they experience a force that causes them to follow curved paths. The radius of it depends on the ion’s m/z: heavier or less charged ions curve less through a larger radius, while lighter or more charged ions curve more sharply through a smaller radius.
