Porifera
Animal phylum with asymmetrical bodies, no true tissues or organs, and a skeleton made of collagen and spicules; includes sponges.
Cnidaria
Animal phylum with free-swimming members, harpoon-like structures, and a simple nerve net; includes jellyfish and corals.
Platyhelminthes
Animal phylum with bilaterally symmetrical bodies, a head and tail, but no circulatory system or hard skeleton; includes planarians and tapeworms.
Annelida
Animal phylum with segmented bodies, muscles, and bristle-like structures; includes earthworms and leeches.
Arthropoda
Animal phylum with a hard exoskeleton, jointed appendages, and segmented bodies that molt to grow; includes crabs, spiders, and scorpions.
Mollusca
Animal phylum with a radula (feeding organ), a muscular foot, gills or lungs, and often a calcium shell; includes octopuses, squids, and oysters.
Echinodermata
Animal phylum with radial symmetry (5-point), a hard, spiny covering on the skin, and the ability to regenerate; includes starfish and sand dollars.
Chordata
Animal phylum characterized by a notochord; includes fish, snakes, and humans.
Amylase
Enzyme that breaks down starch into maltose in the mouth and small intestine.
Pepsin
Enzyme that breaks down proteins into peptides in the stomach.
Lipase
Enzyme that breaks down lipids into fatty acids in the small intestine.
Intracellular Digestion
Digestion that occurs when each cell digests and egests food individually.
Extracellular Digestion
Digestion that occurs inside a digestive tract or cavity.
Filter Feeding
Type of feeding where food particles are strained out of water; example: Humpback whale.
Substrate Feeding
Type of feeding where organisms live on/in what they eat; example: parasites.
Fluid Feeding
Type of feeding where organisms feed off of liquids like blood and nectar; example: mosquitoes.
Bulk Feeding
Type of feeding where organisms ingest large amounts of food; example: humans.
Physical Digestion
Breaks food into smaller pieces
Chemical Digestion
Enzymes break down the food into molecules
Endoscopy
Camera tube which examines digestion tract to see any issues such as tumor
