The social psychology of how we think about, influence and relate to one another.
Attribution theory
The theory that we explain peoples behavior by either the situation or the person's disposition.
Fundamental Attribution error
The tendency for observers when analyzing other people behavior, to underestimate the impact of the situation and to overestimate the impact of personal disposition (blaming the person without considering the situation)
Ex. Havens sleeping in class because shes lazy and doesn't care, but really she didn't get enough sleep last night because she was doing HW
Attitude
feelings, often influenced by our beliefs that predispose us to respond in a certain way to objects people and events.
Peripheral route persuasion
Occurs when people are influenced by incidental cues
Ex. a speakers attractiveness, a celebrity endorsement
Central Route persuasion
occurs when interested people focus on the arguments and respond w favorable thoughts
Ex. when buying a car you focus on the price of it

the tendency for people who have agreed to small requests to comply later to a large one
Role
a set of expectations (norms) about a social position, defining how those in the position ought to behave
Cognitive dissonance theory
The theory that we act to reduce the discomfort (dissonance) we feel when 2 of out thoughts (cognitive) are inconsistent
Ex. I want to stop running, but I also want a good mile time
Door in the face
Asking for a large request, to work your way down, then maybe they'll say yes to something smaller
EX. asking your parents for $100 when you really only want 20, so then when you ask for 20 it seems like nothing
Conformity
adjusting out behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standard, you don't want to feel awkward and different

influence resulting from a persons desire to gain approval or avoid disapproval

The tendency for people in a group to expert less effort then when working by themselves
