Consequentialism
the idea that the morality of an action depends only on its outcomes. Good actions are those with good results.
Utilitarianism
the most well-known form of consequentialism. It says we should act to produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number.
The Principle of Utility
The right action is the one that creates the highest net utility: the most happiness or well-being, and the least harm or suffering.
Act vs. Rule Utilitarianism
Act utilitarianism judges each action individually. Rule utilitarianism asks what rules tend to create the best outcomes overall.
