Motion
The movement of an object from one position to another with time.
Scalar Quantities
Quantities described with numerical values or magnitude only (e.g., time, speed, mass, temperature).
Vector Quantities
Quantities described with numerical values and direction (e.g., velocity, acceleration, force, weight).
Distance
Total length of the path traveled, following all the turns and/or changes in direction.
Displacement
Straight line path from the starting point directly to the ending point, including the direction of the travel.
Speed
Distance covered per unit time. s=d/t
Velocity
The speed and direction of the motion of an object. v=d/t
Acceleration
When the velocity of an object changes, either due to a change in speed, direction, or both. a = Δv/t
Kinematics
Deals with the analysis of the motion of objects without concern for the forces causing the motion.
Linear Horizontal Motion
Motion in a horizontal plane (e.g., motion of bikes or cars on roads).
Linear Vertical Motion
Motion in a vertical plane (e.g., motion of free-falling objects).
Free-Fall Motion
State when an object is free from all restraints and only acts under the influence of gravity.
Elapsed Time
The time that has passed since the beginning of motion.
Acceleration due to gravity (g)
9.8 m/s^2
