Citizenship
The legal status and rights of being a recognized member of a country.
Duty
A legal obligation that a citizen is required to perform by law.
Responsibility
An action or task that a citizen should voluntarily perform for the common good.
Three Levels of Government
The three tiers of government structure consisting of federal (national), state, and local levels.
Naturalization
The official legal process through which a foreign citizen or non-citizen becomes a citizen of a country.
Requirements for Naturalization
Criteria a non-citizen must satisfy to gain citizenship, including residency duration, passing a civics test, and taking an oath of allegiance.
jus soli
The principle of law granting citizenship to anyone born within the territory or soil of a country.
Direct Democracy
A form of government where citizens directly participate in voting and deciding on laws and policy decisions.
Representative Democracy
A government system in which citizens elect leaders and officials to create laws and govern on their behalf.
Absolute Monarchy
A system of government where a monarch holds unlimited authority and rule without constitutional restraints.
Constitutional Monarchy
A form of government in which a monarch serves as head of state within limits defined by a constitution and laws.
Oligarchy
A structure of government in which power is held by a small, select group of individuals.
rule of law
The legal doctrine that all people and institutions are subject to and accountable under the law.
limited government
A governing body whose power exists only within predefined limits set by a constitution or law.
Refugee
A person forced to flee their home country to escape persecution, war, or violence.
Deportation
The formal, legal expulsion of a non-citizen or foreign national from a country.
Five Major Duties of Citizens
Essential legal duties required of citizens, including obeying laws, paying taxes, serving on a jury, defending the nation, and attending school.
Responsibilities of a Good Citizen
Voluntary civic actions such as voting, staying informed on issues, and contributing to the community.
14th Amendment
The constitutional amendment defining U.S. citizenship as being born or naturalized in the United States and guaranteeing equal protection of the law.
Expatriation
The voluntary process of giving up or renouncing one's citizenship in a country.
Denaturalization
The revocation or loss of naturalized citizenship by government action, usually due to fraud during the application process.
Purpose of Government
To maintain order, protect citizen rights, provide public services, and ensure security.
Informed Citizen
A citizen who actively seeks knowledge about local and national issues to participate effectively in a democracy.
