What type of tissues are called meristematic tissues?
The growth tissue where cells divide continuously.
What is the function of apical meristematic tissue?
For height increase at tips of root and shoots.
Where is lateral meristematic tissue located?
Around the stems and roots beneath them in vascular form.
What is the function of intercalary meristematic tissue?
For regrowth at internodes and bases of leaves.
What happens to mature meristematic cells after division?
They become permanent tissues through a process called differentiation.
What characterizes permanent tissues?
They have an inability to divide.
What is the outermost layer of plants called?
Epidermis.
What is the purpose of the cuticle on the epidermis?
To reduce water loss; it's thick in dry habitats.
What are root hairs and where do they arise from?
Projections from epidermal cells in roots for absorbing water and minerals.
What is epiblema and where is it found?
The layer that gives rise to root hairs, found on the tips of roots.
What replaces epiblema in older parts of the roots?
Exodermis, a protective tissue.
What are stomata and what is their function?
Pores in the epidermis of leaves that allow for gas transfer and help in transpiration.
