Process-Oriented Approach
A "bottom-up" maintenance program development approach (MSG-1 and MSG-2) that looks at individual components as the most likely causes of equipment malfunction
Hard Time Process
A process requiring that an item be removed from the vehicle and completely overhauled, partially overhauled (restored), or discarded before exceeding a specified operating interval
Hard Time Process
A process ideally applied to a component that consistently fails at a predictable operating age (always fails at X hours of operation)
On-Condition Process
A process requiring that an item be periodically inspected or tested against an established physical standard (wear or deterioration limits) to determine if it can continue in service
Condition Monitoring Process
A process applied when neither the hard time nor the on-condition process is appropriate, involving monitoring the failure rates and removals of components or systems without definite lifetimes or noticeable wear-out periods
Task-Oriented Approach
A "top-down," consequence-of-failure approach (MSG-3) whereby failure analysis is conducted at the highest management level of airplane systems instead of the component level

A program ensuring that all systems, wiring, mechanical controls, components, and installations within a specified zone on the aircraft receive adequate surveillance

A Check
An aircraft check performed approximately every 400-600 hours depending on aircraft type, taking a minimum of 10 hours and lasting 1 or 2 days

An aircraft check requiring careful examination of the aircraft body for damage, deformation, corrosion, or missing parts, including changing filters, lubricating key systems, and inspecting emergency equipment
C Check
An aircraft check performed approximately every 18-24 months or a specific number of flight hours depending on aircraft type and manufacturer

It contains information required to isolate and correct faults in the systems and equipment installed in the aircraft.
Non-Destructive Testing Manual (NTM/NDTM)
Gives instructions with regard to specific nondestructive testing procedures for the aircraft.
Wiring Diagram Manual (WDM)
For Boeing, it is a collection of diagrams, drawings, and lists that define the wiring of associated equipment installed on the aircraft.
