Biology
The scientific study of life, exploring the processes, structures, and interactions of living organisms.
Order
A property of life where living things exhibit a high degree of organization, from simple to complex structures.
Reproduction
The ability of organisms to produce offspring, which ensures the continuation of their species.
Growth and Development
The process by which organisms grow and develop according to a program encoded in their DNA.
Energy Processing
The property of life where organisms acquire and use energy to power life activities and metabolic reactions.
Regulation (Homeostasis)
The process by which organisms maintain a stable internal environment within physiological limits.
Response to the Environment
The ability of organisms to react to stimuli from their surroundings.
Evolutionary Adaptation
The process where populations adapt to their environments over generations through the survival and reproduction of individuals with advantageous traits.
Biosphere
The highest level of biological organization, consisting of all environments on Earth that support life.
Ecosystem
A level of organization including all living organisms in a particular area plus the physical components they interact with, such as soil, water, and air.
Community
All the different populations of species living and interacting within a specific ecosystem.
Population
A group of individuals belonging to the same species that live in a particular area.
Organism
An individual living being.
Organ System
A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function, such as the digestive system.
Organ
A structure composed of different tissues working together to perform a function, such as the stomach.
Tissue
A group of similar cells that perform a specific, shared function.
Cell
The fundamental structural and functional unit of all living organisms and the smallest unit exhibiting all properties of life.
Organelle
A membrane-enclosed structure within a eukaryotic cell that performs a specific function, such as the nucleus.
Molecule
A cluster of atoms held together by chemical bonds, such as DNA.
Emergent Properties
New properties that arise at each level of biological organization due to the complex interactions of components at lower levels.
Prokaryotic Cells
Cells that are simpler, smaller, and lack a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles; they were the first cells to evolve.
Eukaryotic Cells
Larger, more complex cells containing a membrane-bound nucleus housing the DNA and other organelles, found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists.
Producers
Organisms, such as plants, that convert light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis.
Consumers
Organisms that obtain energy by eating other organisms.
Decomposers
Organisms, like bacteria and fungi, that break down dead organic matter to return nutrients to the ecosystem.
Energy Flow
The movement of energy through an ecosystem in a one-way direction, usually entering as sunlight and exiting as heat.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
The molecule carrying genetic information, composed of four nucleotide bases: Adenine (A), Guanine (G), Cytosine (C), and Thymine (T).
Genes
Segments of DNA that code for specific traits and are passed from parents to offspring.
Genome
The complete set of genetic information for an organism.
Taxonomy
The branch of biology concerned with naming and classifying organisms into a hierarchical system.
Bacteria
One of the three domains of life; it consists of prokaryotic, diverse, and widespread organisms.
Archaea
One of the three domains of life; it consists of prokaryotic organisms often found in extreme environments.
Eukarya
One of the three domains of life; it includes organisms with eukaryotic cells such as protists, fungi, plants, and animals.
Natural Selection
A mechanism of evolution where individuals with traits better suited to their environment have unequal reproductive success, leading to the accumulation of favorable traits.
Hypothesis
A tentative answer or proposed testable explanation for an observation in the scientific method.
Qualitative Data
Descriptive information gathered during scientific investigation.
Quantitative Data
Numerical measurements gathered during scientific investigation.
Inductive Reasoning
The process of deriving general principles from specific observations.
Deductive Reasoning
The process of predicting specific outcomes from general principles.
Scientific Theory
A well-substantiated explanation of the natural world supported by a vast body of evidence and repeated confirmation.
Controlled Experiments
Experiments where only the independent variable is manipulated while controlled variables are kept constant to measure effects on the dependent variable.
Artificial Selection
The process by which humans selectively breed organisms for desired traits, such as in crops, livestock, or pets.
