White Primary
A practice that permitted political parties to exclude African Americans from voting in primary elections, which in effect disenfranchised black voters in southern states where winning the Democratic primary was tantamount to winning the general election.
Title IX
A provision added to a federal aid to higher education law in 1972 that implements antidiscrimination policies based on gender, spelling out federal oversight of colleges' and universities' practices initially regarding support of intercollegiate sports but increasingly regarding sexual harassment.
