keep concentration of dissolved substances in blood at normal levels

remove waste substances

the machine has partially permeable membranes what goes through and what doesn`t

permeable to wear ions urea

impermeable to - protein, large molecules

on the other side of membrane there is

dialysis fluid

dialysis fluid has the concentration of glucose and ions as healthy person why?

it creates a concentration gradient for urea to diffuse back away from glucose and ions

it doesn`t take strip the blood of useful substances

this has disadvantages

3x a week for 4 hours expensive

advantages

buys time until a donor is available

the only current long term treatment is

kidney transplant

the immune system could reject what is done to prevent this

take drugs for it

advantage

cost less in long run

disadvantage

long wait lists for kidney transplants
