Wheezing
High-pitched, squeaking sound, best heard on expiration over all lung fields, unrelieved by coughing (asthma, COPD, emphysema)
Crackles / Rales
Simulated by rolling hair bear ear between two fingers, best heard on inspiration in the lower bases, unrelieved by coughing (CHF, pneumonia)
Rhonchi
Course, harsh, low-loud gurgling or rattling, best heard on expiration over bronchi and trachea, often relived by coughing (bronchitis, pneumonia)
Stridor
Life threating!
Harsh, high-pitched, easily audible on inspiration, progressive narrowing of upper airway requiring immediate attention (partial airway obstruction, croup, epiglottis)
Unilateral Absent or Diminished
Inability to hear equal, bilateral breath sounds (pneumothorax, tension pneumothorax, hemothorax, or Hx of pneumectomy)
