Declaration of Independence

The Document that the US used to declare their independence from Great Britain. significant because it declared the rights that were established for the new country, and was a framework with ideals for how the nation should operate

Despotism

When one person has all authority and they use said authority against the will of the people. Significance: Used to describe the King in the Declaration of Independence

Tyranny

The oppressive use of power. Also used to describe the King in the Declaration of Independence.

Right to Life

One of the inalienable rights proclaiming all are guaranteed life. This right proved British tyranny because the British refused to punish military officers who killed colonists. 

Right to Liberty

An inalienable right proclaiming all have freedom of action. This proved British tyranny through impressment (conscription)

Right to Pursue Happiness

An inalienable right proclaiming all may strive for the betterment of themselves and society. This right brought criticism of British taxation and trade barriers.

Equality

The idea that all should have the same standing. Political differences about this term focus on equality under the law vs. equality of outcomes.
