**Napoleon started winning battles and captured parts of northern africa and gained favor with the people of france. Napoleon decides to go to the government during 1797 and ask if he can capture some of Britain's property. Napoleon loses the battle in Egypt and is very depressed when he goes back to Paris and he soon figures out what he wants to do.**

1. **His first order is to have complete control and appointed officials to implement his policies and procedures. His second order was to get rid of the pope because he knew he wasn’t catholic but people in france were catholic. He went to the pope and said that he would tell the people that the country is catholic, but the pope leaves and the land belongs to napoleon. The pope agreed and this led to massive support and brought unity to the country and removed people that were in opposition to napoleon. His last order consisted of laws(seven law codes). Equality of all citizens, right to choose a profession of their own, right to choose a profession of their own, choose a profession of their own, choose your own religion, religiously tolerant, abolished serfdom, and included enlightenment influenced laws, but they didn’t apply to women. He also included censorship which meant you couldn’t say anything bad about napoleon.**
**Napoleon’s new laws**

why is this a pattern, political, and cultural development?
9
New cards
**The peace treaty of 1802 wasn’t really a treaty, his goal as a dictatorship was to take over other countries. Napoleon wanted the other countries and his country to be ok and had peace such as Austria, Russia, Britain, and such but it was short lived.**
**Peace treaty of 1802**

why is this a poltical development?

New cards
**Napoleon attempts to conquer all and wants to eliminate the monarchies, and uses the french revolution to justify it. This only makes sense in france, and then napoleon wants to go to nonbelieving countries and eliminate the things that make the country bad and reestablish them. He wants to make a grand empire where freedoms for the people will last and he starts in prussia. He wants to start in the little surrounding countries and end with britain and russia. These two countries figured out what he was doing and linked their forces to take him down. Some countries sided with Napoleon because they knew how manipulative he was.**
**Napoleon’s beginning of conquering**

why is this a poltical and pattern?
11
New cards
**As Napoleon’s plan to conquer continued, this is the first time in history that we witness nationalism. This is the process of showing national pride and support for one’s country and this is the first time countries are proud of what they are foing and who they are.**

1. **At this time, napoleon was feeling overzealous and had conquered all the little areas. He now decided to go to russia and invade. He would offer the continental system which means that russia and britain would end the battles, but would have to pay taxes to him for imports and exports, both said no. The process to russia was two fold because firstly he went to russia and everyone would soon fall in line because it was the hugest challenge. Also russia was a challenge because all the great dictators could never conquer russia because of the climate and terrain. He went to russia with 6hundred thousand soldiers, russia knew and burned all the towns and took their citizens further into the countryside. Soldiers of napoleon died because of hunger and froze to death(alexander the great) and only 40 thousand soldiers were left. Napoleon goes back but britain was waiting for him in france and europe finally fights back and Napoleon is captured.**
**Attempt at russia and napoleon’s capture**

why is this cultural and political?

New cards
**The countries weren’t sure what to do, so they brought back the monarchy and revolutions erupted. They brought in Louis’s cousin(18th). Napoleon escapes and once the new king hears, he sends in armies, but they don’t capture Napoleon because he has a heartfelt speech on a soapbox. Russia, britain, austria, and prussia join forces to defeat him at the battle of waterloo in beligium. They then took him to st. helena island in caribbean until he died in 1821.**
**The coutries problems and napoleon's redemption**

why is this poltical and cultural?

New cards
**The congress of vienna was to ensure that no one can try and conquer the entirety of europe again. They restored the monarchies in countries, no more invasions from other countries, territorial lines are arranged. Conservatism emerged, which is the concept of not overstepping boundaries and working on individual country’s revenue. Also, upkeep of each other’s countries.**
**The congress of Vienna and conservatism**

why is this poltical

New cards
**The concert of europe was needed after the meeting of vienna, to make sure everyone was following the rules(annual). It was to talk about any problems. Principle of intervention was take care of matters and to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Could send armies if more problems occur.**
