REAL ID
A law that requires driver licenses and IDs to meet certain security standards to be accepted for domestic air travel or to access some federal facilities.
Assigned WA Number (WDL Number)
A specific identification number assigned to Washington licenses, permits, and ID cards, which often starts with the letters WDL.
License Express
The secure website where Washington residents can access many DOL services, such as making appointments, pre-applying for permits, and renewing licenses.
Intermediate driver license
A restricted license for teens ages 16 and 17 that involves specific limitations on passengers and driving hours before an unrestricted license is granted.
Agricultural permits
Permits that allow drivers under 18 years old to drive within a specific area for farm work, with no minimum age requirement.
Organ donor
A designation indicated by a heart symbol on a license, signifying the holder has chosen to be part of the donor registry.
Driving Knowledge Exam
An assessment that evaluates a driver's understanding of Washington’s rules of the road, which must be passed before the Driving Skills Exam.
Driving Skills Exam
A practical assessment that evaluates a driver's ability to apply Washington’s rules of the road using a legally licensed and registered vehicle.
Certificate of Ownership (Title)
A document issued by the DOL showing the registered and legal owner(s) of a vehicle, the VIN, and any bank information regarding loans.
Vehicle Report of Sale
A form that must be filed within 5 days of selling, trading, gifting, or disposing of a vehicle to report the transaction to the state.
Liability Insurance Requirements
Mandatory coverage in Washington including at least $25,000 for bodily injury/death of one person, $50,000 for two or more persons, and $10,000 for property destruction.
Vehicle Safety Technology (VST)
Systems and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) designed to reduce the impact of crashes by trying to prevent them or providing advanced warnings.
Tire tread limit
The minimum legal depth for tire tread, which should not be less than 322 of an inch.
Headlight Law
Washington law requiring headlights to be on from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise.
Pitch
The forward and backward motion of a vehicle caused by weight shifts during acceleration or abrupt stopping.
Roll
The side-to-side motion of a vehicle body caused by centrifugal force during a turn.
Yaw
The zig-zag motion that occurs when the back of a vehicle slides while the front wheels turn in the direction of steering.
Blind zones
The areas around a vehicle that cannot be seen from the driver’s seat, which can hide other vehicles, motorcyclists, or bicyclists.
Implied Consent Law
A regulation (RCW 46.20.308) where everyone driving in Washington agrees to be tested for alcohol or drugs if suspected of being under the influence.
Polydrug use
The mixing or taking of more than one type of drug (such as alcohol and cannabis), which is the most common impairment involved in fatal crashes.
OODA Loop
A decision-making tool consisting of four steps – Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act – used to navigate road situations proactively.
Sharrows
Road markings used to indicate that a vehicle lane is shared with bicycle traffic.
Zipper merging
A technique used when a lane is closed where vehicles use both lanes until the merge area and then take turns alternating like a zipper.
Hydroplaning
A condition occurring on wet roads when water builds up between tires and the surface, causing the vehicle to lose traction and float or slide.
Dutch Reach method
A technique of opening a vehicle door with the far hand to force the body to turn and check for approaching bicyclists before exiting.
