Kingdom Animalia
A kingdom of eukaryotic cells with no cell walls, which are multicellular (except certain larval stages), chemoheterotrophs, and ingestive (eat things).
Phylum Platyhelminthes
A phylum of primitive animals known as flatworms, which are mostly parasites but include some free-living species.
Class Turbellaria
A class of free-living, non-parasitic flatworms, such as planaria and marine ribbon worms.
Class Digenea (=Trematoda)
A class of parasitic flukes with complex life cycles where larvae are usually in invertebrates (snails) and adults are usually in vertebrates.
Liver flukes
Parasitic flukes in Class Digenea including the genera Clonorchis and Fasciola.
Lung flukes
Parasitic flukes in Class Digenea belonging to the genus Paragonimus.
Blood flukes
Parasitic flukes in Class Digenea belonging to the genus Schistosoma.
Class Monogenea
A class of gill flukes that are parasitic on the gills of fishes and are livebearing parasites, born 'pre-pregnant'.
Class Cestoda (=Cestoidea/Cestodaria)
A class of tapeworms that are obligate intestinal parasites with no gut tube, which absorb nutrients through the skin and have massive reproductive systems.
Taenia spp.
A genus of tapeworms (Class Cestoda) that can be acquired from beef or pork.
Diphyllobothrium spp.
A genus of tapeworms (Class Cestoda) that are eaten from fish.
Echinococcus spp.
A genus of tapeworms (Class Cestoda) found in the human liver or brain.
Phylum Nematoda
A phylum known as roundworms, many of which are free-living or parasites affecting approximately 3 billion people.
Enterobius spp.
A genus of gut parasites within Phylum Nematoda commonly known as pinworms.
Ascaris/Toxocara spp.
Genera of gut roundworms within the Phylum Nematoda.
Necator spp.
A genus of roundworms within Phylum Nematoda commonly known as hookworms.
Dirofilaria spp.
The genus of roundworms responsible for dog heartworm.
Trichinella spp.
A genus of muscle worms within Phylum Nematoda that cause trichinosis.
Loa loa and Onchocerca spp.
Genera of Phylum Nematoda known as eyeworms.
Wuchereria spp.
The genus of roundworms (Phylum Nematoda) associated with causing elephantiasis.
Phylum Annelida
A phylum of advanced segmented worms that are mostly free-living and non-parasitic, with the exception of leeches (ectoparasites).
Phylum Arthropoda
A phylum containing non-helminthic parasites such as arachnids (ticks, mites) and insects (mosquitos, fleas, lice, maggots, bedbugs).
Mosquitos
Identified as MAJOR vectors within the Phylum Arthropoda.
