Geographic Tools
Instruments or resources that help us explore, study, and understand the Earth and its features.

Maps
Flat visual representations of areas that can show countries, cities, roads, and natural features like mountains and rivers.

Globes
Three-dimensional, round representations of the Earth that provide a realistic view of the planet and show how continents and oceans relate to each other.

GPS (Global Positioning System)
A technology that provides precise location information to help find directions and navigate from one place to another.

Physical Maps
A type of map that uses colors to show elevation and landforms.

Political Maps
A type of map that uses lines to show borders of countries or territories and often includes city names.

Thematic Maps
A type of map that uses symbols to represent specific data.

Legend (Key)
A component of a map that explains what symbols mean.

Scale
A component of a map that shows how distance on a map compares to actual distance.

Compass Rose
A component of a map that indicates directions such as North, South, East, and West.
Latitude
Imaginary lines that run horizontally across the globe, measuring distance north or south of the Equator.
Longitude
Imaginary lines that run vertically from pole to pole, measuring distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Equator
The line of latitude marked as 0× that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Prime Meridian
The line of longitude that divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
Interpret
To understand information about places using geographic tools.
Analyze
To look at data to find patterns and relationships.
Visualize
To see the world in different ways.
