What is attribution?
the perceived causes of a particular outcome

What does Weiner’s model look like?
What is the locus of causality?
whether the attributions come from within person or the environment
What is the stability?
whether the attribution is changeable and affects a persons expectations of future outcomes
Problems with Weiner’s model
not sport specific so can’t apply to sporting situations.
What is self-serving bias?
person’s tendency to attribute their failure to external reasons and success to internal reasons
Why do people do self-serving bias?
protect their self esteem
but means they can’t improve as they can’t accept their faults
What is controllability?
whether attributions are under control of performer or under control of others
Controllability for success
performer takes credit for success due to their effort
raises self confidence and encourages mastery orientation
Controllability for failure
failure was due to insufficient prep
gives them control over future success
What is learned helplessness?
belief that failure is inevitable and that can’t control causes of failure
What is mastery orientation?
high achiever who has strong desire to succeed and expects to succeed
