What are four type layers?
Periosteum, Compact Bone, Spongy Bone, & Bone Marrow
Periosteum
covers bone with a dense, fibrous membrane.
What does Periosteum contain?
Blood Vessels
Compact Bone
lies beneath the periosteum
Spongy Bone
Lies beneath the compact bone
Bone Marrow
fills the gaps between the spongy bone (Red) or (Medullary Cavity- Yellow)
What type of layer is Compact Bone?
Dense Outer Layer
What does the compact bone utilize?
Haversian Systems
Haversian Systems is also known as
Osteons (Bullseye)
What does Haversian system look like?
Long, Cylindrical structure arranged in parallel along the long axis of the bone
How does Haversian system provide
helps the bone to withstands compression
What does Haversian Systems consists of?
Lamellae, Lacunae, Osteocytes, & Canaliculi
Lamellae
concentric, cylinder shaped layer of bone matrix
Lacunate
the small cavity containing an osteocyte in bone, or a chondrocyte in cartilage
CB:Osterocytes
facilitate exchange of calcium between blood & bone; Housed in a Lacuna
Canaliculi
canals connecting the lacunae together and to the Haversian canal which carries nutrients/wastes from vessels in the Haversian canal
Spongy (Cancellous) Bone
light, spongy; No Haversian systems; Web-like arrangement
Where is the Spongy Bone found?
low stress area where weight of bone would be a problem
Trabeculae
little “beams” of bone; fills open spaces with marrow
Where are Spongy Bone located?
Ends of Long Bones, Ribs, Sternum, Hips, Vertebrae, Cranium.
