Nonverbal Communication
The process of communicating without using words, involving body language, facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact.
Communication Process
The steps between a source and a receiver that result in the transfer and understanding of meaning.
Channel Richness
The amount of information that can be transmitted during a communication episode.
Filtering
A sender’s manipulation of information so that it will be seen more favorably by the receiver.
Information Overload
A condition in which information inflow exceeds an individual’s processing capacity.
Upward Communication
Communication that flows to a higher level in a group or organization, used to provide feedback to higher-ups.
Downward Communication
Communication that flows from one level of a group or organization to a lower level, used by managers to assign goals and provide instructions.
Grapevine
The organization’s most common informal communication network, often used for gossip and rumors.
Communication Apprehension
Undue tension and anxiety about oral or written communication.
Face-to-Face Communication
Direct communication between two or more people, which allows for immediate feedback and clarity.
